Photographer Skye Meaker looked on as the leopard dozed on a branch in the Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana. 'Then for about half a second she opened her eyes and looked at me. That's how I made the photo,' says Skye.

This intimate portrait earned the 16-year-old South African the title of Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

@skye_meaker_photography shared his story at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos yesterday. Follow the link in our bio to find out more.

We’re marking Penguin Awareness Day with this wonderful image by Wildlife Photographer of Year alumnus Gunther Riehle. Shortlisted for 2016’s #WPYPeoplesChoice Award, this picture was a favourite with penguin fans everywhere.
Gunther arrived at the frozen sea ice in Antarctica in sunshine, but by the evening a fierce storm had picked up. Gunther concentrated on taking images of the emperor penguin chicks huddled together to shield themselves from the snowstorm.

photo_library Before you enter the Museum, take a closer look at the terracotta facade, designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse.
He designed an incredible series of animal and plant ornaments, statues and relief carvings throughout the building. The sculptures represent amazing creatures from nature’s diverse past, such as the Pterosaur, as well as present-day animals including the lion and cobra.

Waterhouse sketched every one of these sculptures in great detail, even asking Museum professors to check the scientific accuracy of his drawings. Swipe 👈 to see Alfred Waterhouse’s pencil drawing of the Pterosaur from July 1876.

Today is #WinnieThePoohDay, marking what would have been author A. A. Milne's 137th birthday.
#DYK the famous fan of hunny was named after a real life Winnie (short for Winnipeg)? She was an American black bear (Ursus americanus) who Christopher Robin met @zsllondonzoo.
These rather beautiful black bears were illustrated by John James Audubon and John Bachman for their 1848 volume 'The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America'. #BlackBear #WinnieThePooh #Ursus #Bears #ScientificIllustration #SciArt #AnimalArt #NaturalHistory #History #ChildrensLiterature #ChildrensBook #AAMilne #LondonZoo #NHMLibrary #Library #Archives #Audubon

A beautiful volume of historical bird illustrations has joined the Museum collections.
The work was created by Victorian ornithologist and publisher John Gould and his wife Elizabeth.
More than 70 watercolours of birds are included in the volume, of which 30 are preparatory drawings for Gould's celebrated publication The Birds of Australia (1840-48). The book was the first published comprehensive survey of Australian birds and included descriptions of 681 species, more than 300 of which were new to Western science.
Arts Council England's Acceptance in Lieu scheme allocated the volume to the Museum.
It joins five previously allocated volumes of natural history artworks to the Museum, and represents the largest, most significant enhancement of the Museum's scientific art and illustration collection since 1937.
