![seven years ago, i attempted to draw all 88 major constellations. i didn't finish, dismayed by the plain nominations of some - the sail, the table, the telescope- that were (re)discovered by fifteen-century europeans sailing in the southern hemisphere.
the names and myths they held for the austral civilizations have been forgotten alongside many other aspects of their cultures. instead, we know these constellations by the names the seamen wrote down, mostly animals they saw (the toucan, the chameleon) and most distintly lacking imagination.
this small constellation, volans, at least sparks a scene: it depicts a flying fish, which is being chased by the nearby stars of a dorado. flying fish skip and hover, like winged pebbles. the longest flight recorded of a flying fish lasted 45 seconds and traversed 400 meters [citation needed]
