2️⃣ - Quadraped Fire hydrants
3️⃣ - Sideying Hip Abduction
4️⃣ - Lateral Band walks (around thigh)
5️⃣ - Lateral band walks (around feet)

🐥 - A combination of any of these exercises can be a great way to strengthen the often forgotten glute meds and mins. The first 3 exercises can be done without the band as well. Both muscles play a large role in pelvic/hip control and stability with sporting activities. Tag someone who could use some of these glute exercises in their training to improve their hip health! Getting back to where you want to be is a lot about being PROACTIVE with your rehab and not REACTIVE.

👍🏼 Being PROACTIVE means that YOU take charge of your situation.  You don't wait or expect for someone else to FIX you. You take an ACTIVE participation in your rehab and understand that for long term results, YOU need to be in the driver's seat, not someone else. Proactive people focus their energy on the things that they CAN control (have an influence on), rather than the things that they CAN'T

🚫 Being REACTIVE means that you let your situation dictate what happens to you. You expect others to make things better and you place the blame on others when things DON'T improve. You take a PASSIVE approach to your rehab and look for QUICK FIXES rather than long term solutions. Reactive people focus their energy on the things that CAN'T control (that they can't influence) and therefore miss out on making a change to all of the things they CAN control

🔹 In essence:
📌 REACTIVE people want the RESPONSIBILITY to be in the hands of OTHERS
📌 PROACTIVE people want the RESPONSIBILITY in their OWN hands

💯 As we've seen time and time again in the research, the people that take responsibility for getting themselves better with the help and guidance of their providers have the BEST outcomes compared to those who put that responsibility on solely in the hands of their providers

💥 It's been said before but I'll say it again: As a Physiotherapist, I am an expert at GUIDING you back to your full function and beyond. I am not an expert in FIXING you (nobody is, and if they say they are, they're either ignorant or lying). YOU "fix" yourself, and we provide the roadmap. It's as simple and (sometimes) as complicated as that

The 'J' sign, typically seen in patients with a history of patella dislocation(s) is one way of assessing the tracking of the knee. The patella is most susceptible to dislocation at end range extension and normally dislocates to the outside, hence the patients knee cap on his left side tracking slightly laterally at the end of range (looks like an upside down J). Quad strength is key to conservative management, although, early stage rehab should avoid loaded end range extension.

Equally, getting better from injury is 90% how much effort YOU put into your rehab.

The other 10% comes from seeing a professional, getting the right diagnosis, being told the right exercises that will help you, being shown how to do them properly. As well as any passive treatments they deem necessary at the time.

Without you seeking help or doing the exercises, the injury will either A, not get better or B take a disproportionate amount of time to get better.

The healing process will happen anyway, all people in my profession can do is optimise the process. We do so by advising you on what to/not to do, what exercises to do and guide you through the process from beginning to end ensuring that you don't push yourself too quickly or take steps backwards in the rehab process.

The longer you leave that first visit, the longer it will take to reverse any compensatory issues that have happened in the mean time in ADDITION to the original problem.

Please forwards this on to your injured friend who wants to rest their injury and go straight back to sport without any rehab. Or worse, that friend we all have who ignores the small issues that will eventually lead to bigger problems.

One of my favourite exercises for overall Shoulder Health is the Single Arm KROC Cable Row in a Split Stance 🔥.
.
Pay attention and notice the deliberate change in hand positioning throughout the movement and the transition from protraction to retraction, taking the scapular through its full ROM ✅
.
The things I love most about this Exercise is:.
.
1️⃣ It provides an AMAZING stretch through the Lats / Thoracic Spine and a DISGUSTING Lat Pump 🔥
.
If you’re someone who suffers from midback / shoulder tightness or struggles to “activate” their Lats, then this is for YOU
.
2️⃣ It takes the Scapular through its full range of motion.
👉 Protraction / Reaching 👉 Retraction.
.
Most strength based athletes don’t generally incorporate REACHING variations into their programs and as a result suffer a wide array of scapular dyskinesis or shoulder dysfunction 🏋🏻‍♀️
.
To OPTIMISE the benefits of this exercise, focus on the following cues.
🔹Setup both legs VERTICAL to the ground.
🔹 Squeeze the GLUTE of the planted knee.
🔹 Lock the rib cage down the ENTIRE movement.
🔹 Allow the Thumb & Pinky to detach on the ECCENTRIC portion and SLOW IT DOWN.
🔹 PRE - SET the scapular, prior to initiating the Row.
🔹 Think of “SQUISHING” your ribcage with your elbow when you finish the rep.

For Back Gains throw these in at the end of your workout as a FINISHER and enjoy the pump 💦

For Shoulder Health throw these in at the start of your workout as an “ACTIVATION” supersetted with some “LANDMINE PRESS” (see previous video) and feel the difference in STABILITY on the big lifts ✅ .

Both Colin and I work in clinics that don’t have ultrasound and interferential machines, but there are many of you who do have them at your disposal. If a patient comes in asking for a low value treatment, can you offer them both? Is that bad if you’re achieving the same end result?

Would you reflect back and say the management of that patient was poor even though you implemented high value care, the patient reached discharge goals (strength etc) and the patient was happy?

The humble skull crusher.

Honestly, I have always felt that skull crushers are one of the best ways to maintain a healthy upper thoracic spine and full shoulder range in flexion - when done well! Flexion associated low back pain patients will also love this and it’s good later stage rehab for any extension-associated low back pain.

It’s a fairly easy exercise to do if you swallow your pride and take the weight down. Start with a modest weight, your key coaching points are:

1. Maintain an even pressure through the spine into the bench - it you find you arch and the lower ribs pop up then you’re unlikely to develop your shoulder or upper thoracic range.
2. We all have “a side”. By this I mean a good side and a less awesome side. Try and keep the dumbbell central so both shoulders are moving through range. If you struggle with this you could use two separate dumbbells 👍🏼

This exercise using a half inflated Pilates ball is one of the rehab exercises we are using with our TFCC rehab client. The half inflation adds an element of instability to the pressure through the carpal bones and also through the elbow and shoulder whilst also adding in some wrist movements for good measure. As a boxer we want our client to be able to punch and deal with the impact and angle of impact without the chain from the shoulder down to the wrist buckling in any way. You can also add perturbations (more instability) by having a friend gently tap different areas along your arm and on the ball itself to force you to stabilise.

ГЛАВНЫЕ ОСОБЕННОСТИ сплит-приседаний в том, что: а) равномерно задействованы и передняя, и задняя мышечные цепи рабочей ноги без предъявления при этом высоких требований к мобильности голеностопа (как при приседаниях) и без перегрузки спины (как при становых тягах); б) с рабочей ноги снимается часть нагрузки засчет переноса ее на вторую ногу.

Эти особенности полезно учитывать и использовать в тренировках людям с ограничением подвижности голеностопа (после травм лодыжек, например, или просто "деревянных буратинам"), а также людям с болями в спине, когда полноценно приседать и тянуть с отягощениями пока некомфортно, но тренировать квадрицепсы и ягодицы все же нужно.

ПРЕИМУЩЕСТВО приседаний в ножницы перед динамическими выпадами - в большей безопасности. Сравним их.

А. Сплит-приседание (видео 1). Обе ноги постоянно в контакте с опорой, что является наиболее безопасным и легким для выполнения.

Б. Выпад назад (видео 2). Рабочая (передняя) нога имеет стабильную точку опоры, задняя же периодически ее теряет при подшагивании к рабочей ноге.

В. Выпад вперед (видео 3). Здесь уже рабочая нога периодически теряет контакт с опорой, что требует дополнительной ее стабилизации при приземлении. Этот вариант является наиболее проблематичным для людей с больными коленями.

НЮАНСЫ ТЕХНИКИ.

Ставьте ноги не на одну линию, а на воображаемые параллельные прямые, расположенные на ширине таза. Это оптимально с т.з. биомеханики и удобно с т.з. устойчивости.

Ширина шага должна быть такова, чтоб в нижней точке приседа колено передней ноги находилось над пяткой, а колено задней ноги - под тазобедренным суставом.
